What Happens

Under anesthesia, the team measures the trachea and places a self-expanding mesh stent through the mouth, using fluoroscopy to see where it goes. There is no incision. Many dogs go home within a day or two (UC Davis veterinary hospital).

Success Rate

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons reports about 95 percent of dogs are immediately improved.

Complications To Ask About

• Ongoing cough, which many dogs keep to some degree
• Tissue growing into the stent
• The stent shifting or, rarely, breaking
• Infection or airway inflammation
